Picnic in the Park – August 17, St. John’s Park

(August 16, 2013) WINNIPEG – The North End Community Renewal Corporation (NECRC), in partnership with several other North End non-profit organizations and our many sponsors, is pleased to announce the 15th annual Picnic in the Park. This year, we are welcoming Aboriginal Music Week as a partner, along with our longstanding sponsors Manitoba Public Insurance, James Richardson & Sons, Limited, The North West Company and Assiniboine Credit Union. The Picnic in the Park is a free community event that started in 1999. Picnic celebrates the cultural diversity of the North End and aims to present a positive image of the community. The event now has over 2,000 community members attending and that number continues to grow.The event includes free food, children’s activities, cultural entertainment, prizes, artist and craft sales and organization information booths. “Picnic is in its fifteenth year and going strong,” says Robert Neufeld, Executive Director at NECRC, “we celebrate the culture and diversity of the North End by providing different foods, activities and entertainment to represent as many cultures as we can.” Neufeld says, “It’s great to have so many partners working together and this year we are especially pleased to partner with Aboriginal Music Week.”

For this year’s entertainment, we welcome the Norman Chief Memorial Dancers with special guest Alex Lamoureux, Indian City, Diamond Disc Dogs and DJ Javier Estrada. A free meal will be provided, consisting of hot dogs, samosas, pyrizhky (Ukrainian buns), bannock, apples, bananas and granola bars.

Children’s activities will include storytelling, drop-in bike repair, art workshops, face painting, Mini Car Town (provided by Manitoba Public Insurance) and a special planting workshop.

Some of our community partners include: Aboriginal Visioning for the North End, the City of Winnipeg, Mount Carmel Clinic, North End Women’s Centre, FACT, St. John’s Residents Association, William Whyte Resident’s Association, Dufferin Resident’s Association, the Elizabeth Fry Society of Manitoba, Ma Mawi Wi Cha Itata Centre Inc., Assiniboine Credit Union and the North End Food Security Network.
